Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, most often in the extremities, and affects approximately 1% of the U.S. population. Southeastern Medical Oncology Center utilizes the 5 step Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP) technique to treat lymphedema. This includes manual lymph drainage, bandaging, skin/nail care, exercise, and education. Patients are usually treated 2 - 4 weeks on a daily basis depending on the severity of the lymphedema. Patient and Family Counseling Services
SMOC offers counseling services with a clinical social worker to help patients and families cope with concerns and anxieties that may arise during illness and treatment. Being diagnosed with a serious illness has an impact on the entire family structure. Every family is different, and a wide range of emotional issues can surface during times of stress. In order to provide comprehensive care, mental health services are offered to patients as well as their family members. Individual, couples, and group/family therapy sessions focus on patient education, psychosocial support and therapeutic intervention. Issues addressed include depression, anxiety, stress and anger management, adjustment, caregiving, empowerment, grief and loss.
